ICM CITY LIFE

3 Day Photo Workshop in Bolzano, Italy

3 days means a full 3 awesome days learning and does not include arrival and departure day!

The setting for this fun, informative and invigorating workshop is the beautiful city of Bolzano, Italy. It's the most incredible  place to visit and to learn the art of shooting ICM city life. I return again and again.

What you will learn:

  • What ICM is and what it is not

  • How ICM can be used to make a very ordinary scene shimmer and dance

  • What equipment you need - camera, focal lengths and filters

  • What factors are involved in making a good ICM photo

  • Composition

  • Light

  • Moment

  • The all important directional movements and their effects

  • Camera settings and their effects

  • Observation and looking at colour/black and white in an ICM image. It’s not the same as in a focused shot, not at all

  • Post processing

  • How to laugh at yourself as you dance around with your camera with not a care in the world, knowing you are creating art!

You will need:

  • A DSLR or mirrorless interchangeable lens camera with batteries and charger

  • Either a zoom lens of around 18-55mm with a fixed aperture if you have one, but it's not a must and/or around a 35mm prime lens (Full frame equivalent 24-70mm or 50mm) I shoot with the Fujifilm XPro3 or XT4 with 16-55mm 2.8 zoom and the 35mm 1.4 prime.

  • A 6 stop ND filter, I find screw in better and you don't need to buy an expensive one for ICM, mine is Gobe, now Urth. I would advise against buying a variable ND.

  • Sturdy walking boots and comfortable clothing

Itinerary:

Arrival Day:

Arrive any time before evening. We will head to a local bar or restaurant to get to know each other a little and talk about the days ahead.

Day One: Learning to Move

ICM is all about movement, intentional movement with an intended outcome, not a result that looks like you tripped over a kerb! Today we will learn about camera settings and shutter speeds along with various swipes, jiggles, hops and circles that will become tools in your armoury when shooting ICM in any city. We will break for lunch to chat about progress and I'll always be on hand to guide each person as needed.  As evening falls we'll be out again watching the city come to life in a very different way.

Day Two: Observation

You might  know how to spot a good scene, but ICM is very different to focused shooting. What's behind, what's in front of you and of what you want to shoot? Do the colours fit? Is there a good composition here? What's the best angle and when should I shoot or wait? Should I shoot colour or black and white? What would be the best movement for the scene I'm looking at? What do I want to express with my image? Editing will make up a portion of the time before dinner today.

Day Three: Off You Go!

Today I'm cutting you loose to roam the city and put into practice everything you've learned. I will always be on hand if you need help and we will meet for lunch to discuss how it's going. You'll head back out after lunch with a specific task and come back plenty of time to grab a drink at my favourite bar for a review and a round up of the three days together. In the evening we will head to a great restaurant for more ICM related chat and a farewell meal.

Departure Day:

Time to say goodbye as you make your way back home to continue your ICM journey.
